Sermon Series: Lessons from Legends

📖 Acts 7:20-29 (NIV): “At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child. For three months he was cared for by his family. When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son. Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action. When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’ But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.”

📖 Romans 12:1-2 (MSG): So, here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

1. Moses’ Identity - “Who am I?”

“Who am I?”, is not a humble question—it is a disqualifying one.

God’s response:
“I will be with you.”
  • The answer is not about Moses’ qualifications, but about God’s presence.

In God you are:
  • A new creation
  • Forgiven and redeemed
  • A child of God

2. God’s Identity - “What if they ask Your name?”

Moses, not fully knowing who God is, asks, “Who are you?”

God replies:
“I am who I am.”
  • A timeless name, unbound by past, present, or future.
  • God is self-existent, unchanging, sovereign, and ever-present.

3. Moses Still Insecure - Self-Doubt and Fear of Rejection

“What if they do not believe me?”

God gives him signs:
  • Staff into Snake — Symbol of God's power over nature and evil.
  • Leprous Hand — Symbol of God's power over disease and ability to heal and restore what is broken.
  • Water from the Nile to Blood — The Nile was Egypt’s life source. God shows He has authority over life.

Timeless Truths:
  1. God doesn’t wait for your confidence; He calls for your obedience.
  2. Your limitations are invitations to trust God.
  3. God’s presence is the only credential you need.
  4. Deliverance begins with obedience.
